We also encourage you to visit the National Rottwiler Council of Australia website which provides more indepth information regarding the breed as well as links to individual state clubs:
Physical Strength and Strong Mind
The Rottweiler is a very physical and powerful dog, with an equally powerful mind. Male Rotweilers can at maturity weigh up to 55-57kg, females at maturity around 57-60kg. With such physical strength and strong mind, it is critical that you have your dog under control at all times and insist that your dog uses its mind and strength for you and not against you. In addition to the Rottweilers physical strength, most are strong willed and determined in nature, varying significantly amongst individual dogs. These virtues of the breed are not negative attributes, but must be strongly considered prior to contemplating ownership. To get the best out of your rottweiler you should be prepared to dedicate the time to ongoing socialization with other breeds, ongoing obedience training, commitment to firm discipline and training (not physical abuse) and most of all lots of love.
If you do not have the time nor the patience to socialise and train your new family member, then please do not purchase a Rottwiler as this is not the breed for you.
Life-time Investment
The average lifespan of a Rottweiler can range from around 10 – 14 years and will require extra care as they enter their mature years. The annual cost of owning a Rottweiler can be upwards of $700. You also need to consider if you able to take adequate care of your Rottweiler for its lifetime.
Please also consider that most vetinary treatments, ranging from worming & tick treatments through to specific prescription mediation is calculated and charged on the weight of the animal... the bigger the breed the more expensive vetinary care costs.
